Tried to play on the NS2 server (dallas2) and encountered problems where it wouldnt let me join the Marine team. The teams were even 10-10 and everytime I entered marine portal it threw me in aliens. It had some kind of message about hive rank. A player named Callisto joined in the middle of my attempts and walked right into marines and was sent to that team right infront of my eyes in ready room bringing marines to 11 players and aliens to 10.
Still waiting for a reply on this issue. Tried playing on your server again and the same thing is happening. (Dallas3)
There's a function that was enabled called Hive Score Shuffle. The game evaluates the skill ranks of the given players and assigns a joining player to a team in an effort to maintain a balanced player skill level. The system decided that you joining Marines would not be beneficial to the balance of the teams, so it assign you to Aliens.
