On the subject of Competitive Play.

In the past couple of weeks, I have noticed an apparent increase in the level of interest surrounding competitive NS2. Because of this, I feel compelled to go ahead and make a post to detail the basics of "how to" for anyone who might be interested, but doesn't exactly know how to get started with it.

    What is competitive play?

Competitive play, henceforth referred to as "Comp", is playing NS2 in a 6v6 setting using a mod developed specifically for the sake of facilitating a more competitive NS2 experience. There are various balance tweaks present in the mod, as well as a restructuring of both Marine and Alien tech trees. Some of these changes were made canon a few patches back, with the introduction of skills such as Metabolize, which was previously exclusive to comp mod.

Playing comp is very different to playing pubs (Public games. Your 12v12s, etc). I'd go as far as to say that it is almost like playing an entirely different game. Due to the fact that there are so few players on each team, there is a great emphasis on personal responsibility in these games. Consequently, you will be required to drastically alter the way in which you approach the game. I could probably supply you with a reasonably comprehensive guide on how to prepare yourself for comp play, but I've found that the best way to get familiar with it is to simply try it.

    The how:

Currently, there are two primary venues for playing comp, without being part of the official NSL league. They are as follows:

    ENSL Gathers
This one is fairly straight forward. This is the website for the official league. On there is a section called "Gathers". This is probably the most competitive of the two possibilities, because a lot of league players will participate in them.

All you need to do is make an account, and then head on over to the Gathers section. From there, all you do is "Click to join Gathers", and you'll appear on the list. From there, you cast a vote on the maps and the server you want to play on, and then head on over. You'll also be provided with the Teamspeak information, which you'll need to join.

    Steam/Reddit PUGs

    Again, this is fairly easy.

Just join the steam group and hop on the mumble. Once there, you'll see different rooms. Park yourself in the lobby when you want to take part in a pug, and then you'll be told what to do next. It's worth noting that the steam group tends to advertise quite actively when they're missing a few people to get a pug going. It can get a little annoying.

    The why:

Why should you be interested in playing comp?
To take a quote from the NSL rules:
Because these games are much more demanding, and arguably more fun. You can get a taste of what NS used to be as a competitive game, pinnacle of FPS games. Nearly all players people who play gathers regularly prefer them over public. Gather games tend to be more balanced too as captains pick the teams, and admins might intervene to avoid boring walkovers.
So go on out there. Dip your feet in the water. You might get yelled at. You might get absolutely crushed. You'll probably end up liking it anyway.
